Kathy's Story
I've been interested in environmental issues for a long time. But seeing “An Inconvenient Truth” in 2006 really motivated me to start doing more. In fact, that summer I gave away nearly 200 free tickets to the movie in my hometown in Wisconsin (after my mom saw it there on opening day and told me there was hardly anyone in the theater!) Because of its message, I thought it was an important movie to help people see.
Anyway, that year at Christmas, I sent my extended family CFLs, rechargeable batteries and a reusable grocery bag. I presented the gift this way: “I need your help with my holiday giving. The gift inside is really for all of us, but to deliver it, I need your help. Look inside to see what I mean.”
In 2007, I decided to again give an energy-saving gift at the holidays, expand upon the 2006 items, and add some educational information and tips. When people started asking if they could buy additional kits for friends, I thought, “Why not?” and Kathy’s Climate Kits was born.
Prior to starting KCK, I'd been a stay-at-home mom for the last several years (after working in public health research.) Now I'm a stay-at-home mom who also assembles climate kits in her basement :-) One of the things I've enjoyed most so far about this venture is showing my two elementary-aged kids the steps in starting a business (I took them along with me to the bank to set up my accounts, etc.) and that you can and should take action on the things you believe in!
Hope you find the kits useful, inspiring - and fun, too. Thanks for visiting the site.
